Teaching attempted to create spaces where teachers could work together to develop their own curriculum and discuss education issues. Instead, elementary teachers will get yet another outside expert with a program and a large price tag.
When high school language arts Teaching in Portland were asked by the Professional Development Committee — a group founded by the school district and the Portland Association of Teachers — which professional development programs had the greatest impact on their students' learning, they overwhelmingly named the Portland Writing Project, teaching Summer Literacy Curriculum Camp, and the Professional Development Days — which were all led by classroom teachers.
Study Programs centre has been pioneer in developing some extremely successful concepts which allow students to freely explore and discover the world of science. The Quadrangle in the centre has number of exhibits, puzzles and games. These interactive experiments make students learn concepts behind mysteries of science and thus develop scientific approach of thinking.
Without the background of learning Study Programs I had a hard time during my first few months in Singapore as it took me a while to get used to it being taught in English.
And I guess, after using English as the main medium in my studies for the past 5 years, my English has undoubtedly improved.
As most of the scientific terminology that were introduced during Science lesson- especially in Physics or Biology- are relatively new to the students even when it is taught in Malay, I do not see any problem for the students if they learnt those new terms in English instead of Malay.
Study Programs is a known fact that most journal and scientific articles are written and published in English in top rated journals, and learning it in English would definitely save the students from the trouble of translating the whole article to Malay before using it. Besides, it would be definitely be an advantage to the students as they would not encounter difficulty understanding the article.
Studies Programs this fast paced world, its up to us to keep ourselves updated in order to be able to compete with others. So DO NOT REVERT THE POLICY as it is our future of the younger generation that is at stake. Unless of course, we would just want to keep sitting back and wait for years for the information to be translated before using it.
Rather than blaming the policy, Studies Programs think most blame should be put on the manner in which the policy is implemented. If the teacher itself is unable to teach well in English despite all the trainings that they have undergone, then how could they be trusted to teach the students well? Studies Programs policy should stay, but more qualified teachers should be recruited for it to be a success especially in rural areas.
