The purpose of having a Karate Gifts grading system within any Martial Arts is to gauge the Progress of the individual's ability using a grading examination based on a set syllabus.
Each step or level of learning has to uncounted carefully ensuring that to the best of your ability you have understood and reached a level of proficiency acceptable to the grading examiners.
It is a point worth remembering that the colour of a belt does not make the Karateka, but it is the ability of the person wearing the Belt which gives it its Karate Gifts worth and acceptability.
The kyu/dan Karate Gifts ranking system, and the modern karategi (modified judogi) were first adopted by Funakoshi in an effort to encourage karate's acceptance by the Japanese. He awarded the first shodan ranks given in karate to Tokuda, Otsuka, Akiba, Shimizu, Hirose, Gima, and Kasuya on April 10, 1924.
The adoption of the kyu/dan Karate Instruction system and the adoption of a standard uniform based on the judogi were 2 of the 4 conditions which the Dai-Nippon Butokukai required before recognizing karate as a "real" martial art.
If you look at photographs of Okinawan karateka training in the early part of this century, you'll see that they were training in their everyday clothes.
The Karate Instruction order of belts used in Seido karate (other styles use different orders) is as follows: White, Blue, Yellow, Green, Brown, Black. At each level below Black Belt, there is also a corresponding "advanced" rank - Advanced White, Advanced Blue, and so on, which is indicated by a patch sewn on to the end of the belt. This forms a total of ten kyu ranks below Black Belt.
The Karate Instruction black belt system, that pertains until today in many martial arts (also see: Goju Ryu Karate Belt System) is said to have first developed in Judo.
