In India Family Culture the joint family is an ancient Indian institution, but it has undergone some change in the late twentieth century.

Although several generations living together is the ideal, actual living arrangements vary widely depending on region, social status, and economic circumstance.

Many Indians live in India Family Culture joint families that deviate in various ways from the ideal, and many live in nuclear families--a couple with their unmarried children--as is the most common pattern in the West.

However, even where the ideal joint family is seldom found (as, for example, in certain regions and among impoverished agricultural laborers and urban squatters).

There are often strong networks of kinship ties through which economic assistance and other benefits are obtained.

Not infrequently, in India Family Culture clusters of relatives live very near each other, easily available to respond to the give and take of kinship obligations.

Even when relatives cannot actually live in close proximity, they typically maintain strong bonds of kinship and attempt to provide each other with economic help, emotional support, and other benefits.

India Combating Illiteracy conference organizers and participants often spoke of the courage it took to show up and acknowledge that they were adults who were still learning how to read. And, in return, they received support and encouragement from others like themselves. State Literacy Project

The idea for the India Combating Illiteracy conference, ''Celebration of Books and People,'' grew out of discussions among teachers of Adult Basic Education, the staff of the Vermont Reading Project and the Vermont Council on the Humanities.

The logistics were daunting, said India Combating Illiteracy, ''Many of these students don't have telephones or cars. Many have small children. We had to think about how to get the word out and then how to get them here.''  Buses and baby sitters were hired with money from the humanities council and a grant from the International Business Machines Corporation. And despite a chilling rain, the students came.

It is noteworthy that the contribution of urban sector to Housing In India is currently expected to be in the range of 50-60 percent. In this context, enhancing the productivity of urban areas is now central to the policy pronouncements of the Ministry of Urban Development.

Cities hold tremendous potential as engines of economic and social development, creating jobs and generating wealth through economies of considerable scale in Housing In India. They need to be sustained and augmented through high urban productivity for a country's economic growth.

Housing In India long term goal was to eradicate the problem of lack of housing, improve the housing conditions of the inadequately housed, and provide a minimum level of basic services and amenities to all. The role of Government was conceived, as a provider for the poorest and vulnerable sections, and as a facilitator for other income groups and private sector by the removal of constraints and the increased supply of land and services.
