Residential School for the Deaf and the Blind is the state's center public school for eligible students who are deaf/hard of hearing and blind/low-vision pre-school through 12th grade.
There is no cost to families for tuition for eligible Florida residents. Residential School for the Deaf and the Blind awards standard and special diplomas and prepares its graduates for a wide range of professional careers and trades. Each year, over 70% of the graduating class continues their education at colleges, universities, and technical training centers.
The Residential School for the Deaf and the Blind is comprised of two departments: the Department for the Deaf and the Department for the Blind and Special Needs. The Special Needs Department serves students who are either deaf or blind and who have a secondary handicap which affects their ability to learn.
The Residential School for the Deaf Children serves students whose abilities range from learning disabled to gift. Qualified students may mainstream part time into the classes. There is no tuition charge for in-state residents. Room, board, and transportation to and from school is provided at state expense.
The mission of Residential School for the Deaf Children is to utilize all available talent, energy, and resources to provide free appropriate public education for eligible sensory-impaired students.
As a school of academic excellence, the school shall strive to provide students an opportunity to access education services in caring, safe, unique learning environment to prepare them to be literate, employable, and independent lifelong learners. The Residential School for the Deaf Children shall provide outreach services that include collaboration with district school boards and shall encourage input from students, staff, parents, and the community. The Health Care Center at the educational programs for deaf students School for the Deaf and the Blind is managed by nursing staff providing services to all students 24 hours a day five days a week. If a students presents with an illness that requires a physician visit, the school has contracted with the University of Florida to provide pediatric care.
