The efforts of the Education India Illiteracy have not gone in vain and it is evident from the latest figures available from the National Sample Survey Organization. The literacy level in India has risen from 52% in 1991 to 62% in 1997.
Education India Illiteracy is all the more creditable because of the countering factor of population growth. The wide gap between male and female literacy rates at last seems to be narrowing as also the urban and rural difference.
The goals of the Education India Illiteracy is to attain full literacy, i.e. a sustainable threshold level of 75 percent by 2005.The mission seeks to achieve this goal by imparting functional literacy to non-literates in the 15-35 age group.
This age group has been the focus of attention because they are in the productive and reproductive period of life.
The total literacy campaign offers them a seconds chance, in case they missed the opportunity or were denied access to mainstream formal education.
The scope of the Education Policy Research programme has been enlarged to include people in the age group 9 to 14 years.
In areas not covered by the non-formal education programme, to ensure that the benefits are made available to out-of-school children as well.
Education Policy Research, special care is taken to bring disadvantaged groups like women, scheduled castes and tribes and backward classes into the programme.
The basic objective is to create a generation, which will ensure that their children are educated, to realize the dream of Education For All.
Education Policy Research presents a brief overview of the traditional childrearing practices in India, chronicles government initiatives in early childhood education, describes the range of programs available in India, and identifies goals that will shape the future of early childhood programs in India.
